The Solution!
As I said in the quick history lesson, the industrial revolution has led to a
great increase in our emissions of greenhouse gases. Although we have improved
slightly since then by stopping the release of CFC’s, we pollute the atmosphere
to a really high level from things such as cars! The picture below shows a
steam tractor: Why do we use these machines then? Machines can do many things at once with no human error and few operators, this way vast quantities of crops can be produced. The same industrialisation was happening in the cities as well. The inventions continued to put people out of work and they flocked to the cities in search of work. Many people came to work in the cities workhouses and the cities grew in size very quickly. The invention of the steam train improved communications and transportation, while the invention of fossil fuelled ships led to quicker and safer travel across the sea. So should we stop using machines? In theory not using machines would help solve the problem, but there are other factors involved. One of the most important has to be cost. Which is why it is important to ensure that instead of telling people what the problem is, we give them cost viable alternatives that the normal member of the public can do. We can not undo the anthropogenic (human) effects of the last few hundred years, but we can resolve not to add to them. And the thing is, slowing the greenhouse effect starts with you! If the enhanced greenhouse effect is a real process then we all have a part to play in slowing it down. Most scientists will say that global warming exists and that we can't stop it! But we can help slow it down. To do this you can use a bike more often or change your car to a more environmentally friendly fuel source such as LPG, electric etc. Anyway, the oil is supposed to run out soon and there is NO TAX on LPG in England, so why not do it now, it makes sense! You can use energy saving light bulbs, buy your electricity from environmentally friendly power stations. The options are endless and the search for new, cheaper and more efficient sources of environmentally friendly energy continues… The Environment! Are you doing your bit!!! |
