Myelin Sheaths

Nerves are neurones. These are single cells which can be very long. There are two main types of neurone, the motor and sensor neurones. Each neurone will have a cell body (which contains the nucleus) and an axon (long tail-like feature). At each end are a series of dendrites. The axon of a neurone can be myelinated or unmyelinated. Myelinated axons are wraped with Schwann cells which form a myelin sheath. Myelinated neurones can transmit signals faster than unmyelinated neurones.
